Cyclonic storm 'Thane' likely to intensify

The coastal districts in the state have been put on     high alert in view of Cyclone Thane which is currently 350 km off the coast of Chennai and is likely to cross the coast on December 30 2011.

HYDERABAD: The cyclonic storm 'Thane' over south-west and southeast Bay of Bengal is likely to move west-north-westwards and intensify into a severe cyclonic storm tomorrow. The storm is likely to cross north Tamil Nadu and South Andhra Pradesh coasts between Cuddalore and Nellore around the morning of December 30, an official release said quoting a bulletin issued by the India Meteorological Department (IMD).

'Thane' remained practically stationary and lay centered at 0530 hrs today about 600 kms east-southeast of Chennai, it said. According to the release, there would be rainfall at most places with isolated heavy rains likely to commence over north Tamil Nadu and Puducherry and south coastal Andhra Pradesh from tomorrow onwards.

Squally winds at a speed of 45-55 kmpm are likely to commence along and off north Tamil Nadu, Puducherry and south Andhra Pradesh coasts from tomorrow morning onwards, it said. Fishermen along north Tamil Nadu, Puducherry and south Andhra Pradesh coasts are advised not to venture into the sea.

Those who are out at sea are urged to return to the coast, the release said. Extensive damage to thatched roofs and huts and minor damage to power and communication lines due to uprooting of large trees is expected, it said.

Collectors of coastal district, besides in Rayaalaseema region have been alerted to take necessary steps to prevent loss to life, cattle and property.

Providing succour to farmers in cyclone Thane affected Cuddalore and Villupuram districts, Tamil Nadu Chief Minister Jayalalithaa on Saturday announced a slew of measures for them, including waiver of land tax.

“Cuddalore and Villupuram will be declared cyclone affected districts and land tax will be completely waived for farmers. Further, as part of the over Rs 440.11 crore pending dues in cooperative banks, small-term loans will be converted as medium-term and medium-term as long-term loans,” she said in the Assembly.

New crop loans would be disbursed and this move would benefit over 1.10 lakh farmers, she said.

Ms. Jayalalithaa announced a comprehensive package for farmers of paddy, coconut, cashew and jackfruit, including providing mini-kits, government assistance in irrigation, supplying seeds and samplings, among others.

With the high altitude areas of Kashmir experiencing snowfall for the second consecutive day today, authorities here issued a fresh “medium danger” avalanche warning covering the snow-bound areas above the height of 6,500 feet in the Valley.

“On the basis of reports, a medium danger avalanche warning has been issued for higher reaches of snow bound areas along the Line of Control (LoC), central and south Kashmir,” Coordinator, Divisional Disaster Management Authority, Aamir Ali said.

He said the areas included Chowkibal, Tangdhar, Machhil, Keran, Gurez and Uri along the LoC, Zojila, Sonamarg and Drass on Srinagar-Leh National highway, and higher reaches of Baramulla in north, and Anantnag, Pulwama, Shopian and Kulgam districts of south Kashmir.

The people living in these areas above the height of 6,500 feet have been advised not to venture in steep and avalanche prone areas and to avoid movement during snowfall, Mr. Ali said, adding the avalanche warning is valid for the next 24 hours.
