Total area under agriculture is NET.... 

If you cultivate the same area more than once in the  year then 
the total area cultivated is more than NET AREA  
which then is called GROSS AREA

2010-11 Net Area Irrigated is 50.34 Lakh Hectares

Gross Area Irrigated is 71.53 Lakh Hectares.

what is contour farming/step farming.. can contour farming be applied in

hilly areas?    Nikita

Contour farming is rounded/circular tilling in the farm
to reduce erosional effect of the wind as the crop will act as wind check...

terrace farming is step farming practiced in the hilly areas to reduce water speeds and

also this is the only way out to cultivate in steeper slopes.. here circular bunds all round the hill will be made to reduce water effects..

contour farming can also be applied to hilly areas ((in the stepped/Terraced land itself))

 they can plough round and go down to the next level of land...
